LA SERENA: INNOVATION AND TRADITION IN THE MONTALCINO’S COUNTRYSIDE
Experience and modernity merge in this part of Tuscany with the strong belief that the biodiversity of the cultivation and the territory can produce richness for the eyes, for the mind and for the earth
The vineyards that punctuate the gentle hills in Montalcino, the olive groves that are silhouetted in the background, the colors and the scents of one of the world’s most beautiful country are the scenario in which the winery La Serena is located. At first sight its landscape could seem just like a typical Tuscan scenery, but the soul and the uniqueness of the Mantengoli family give an extra touch to a company that has been rooted in the territory for 90 years. Its strong point are of course the wines, that express the family passion and the originality of Andrea’s experience, he is leading the company today. In La Serena, everything has a special uniqueness, just like the cellar that was built in 2003 following the bio-architecture principles with a project signed by the Architect Marcello Mantengoli, Andrea’s brother. The winery’s goal is to process and age its wines in a building that is in total harmony with the surrounding landscape, the cellar was built in total respect of the environment and health: this is a building made in brick and Travertine marble, reminiscent of the colors of the Montalcino’s land, with a geothermal system inside which keeps a constant temperature in every season, then there is a solar panel system to warm the water used for the domestic heating as well as for the cleaning of the wine tanks and also some panels for the production of electricity.
And, at least, there is a beautiful terrace, located at the third floor of the tower that faces the Valdorcia and gives every day a unique sight. Here tradition meets modernity in the facility as well as in the Brunello that La Serena produces since 1988: the company started producing 2.000 bottles but now they are producing 30.000 of them, these bottles are the outcome of the work in a grape-growing land of 60 hectares. And how could not this company, that perfectly and deeply blends with its territory not being committed to its protection? The profound respect for the nature has always been one of the mantras of the winery, but since 2010 this course of action became a real commitment with the begin of the organic certification. So, the unmistakable Brunello di Montalcino is born: it has an intense and shiny ruby red color, the bouquet is wide and persistent with elegant fruity scents, ethereal notes of marasca cherry under spirits, dried tobacco hints and a complex reminiscences of sweet spices, it has velvety, long and opulent tannins well supported by a crunchy acidity; this is the most iconic of the local wines, it is perfect matched with red meats and typical Tuscan dishes. The flagship of the company is indeed the Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Gemini, it has an ethereal, strong, balanced, scent with rich and persistent tannins, this wine is born from the finest vineyard of the estate.
The company produces also a Rosso di Montalcino that first refines for 12 months in wood barrels and then in the bottle, and also a rigorously organic extra virgin olive oil.
