THE PRODUCTION OF WINE IN THIS AREA OF MONTALBANO D.O.C.G IS VERY ANCIENT, ACCORDING TO SOME HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS IT WAS ALREADY ACTIVE IN 804 D.C UNDER THE DOMINION OF THE FRANKS.
Excellent quality of Montalbano wines dates back to the late ‘200 when the bishops of Pistoia had it brought as a tribute to their table. The blend of Chianti Montalbano is composed of: Sangiovese (at least 75%), Canaiolo (up to 10%), Malvasia bianca and Trebbiano (together or alone up to 10%). Chianti Montalbano is produced in 500 hectares of vineyards between the towns of Carmignano, Artimino, Bacchereto, Lamporecchio, Vinci and Larciano. Always in this area are also produced wines such as Vin Ruspo D.O.C. Vin Santo D.O.C. and the precious Carmignano D.O.C.G.
Carmignano DOCG is one of the oldest wines in Italy and among the great Tuscan red wines is one of the least known. The Carmignano region was the first DOC in Tuscany to use the Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese blend. Carmignano can be considered the progenitor of the so called Super Tuscan wines, which are the great Tuscan wines obtained by adding to Sangiovese international grape varieties such as Cabernet-Sauvignon or Merlot.
The production area of Carmignano has been defined since 1716: Chianti, Pomino, Carmignano, and Val d’Arno di Sopra, where the boundaries of the areas within which the mentioned wines could be produced were specified. (anticipating the concept of Denomination of Controlled Origin). Sunny and ventilated climate and the particularly fertile soil have favored the constant production of wine and oil. The rebirth of Carmignano took place in the middle of the ‘900 and from that moment it has established itself in the national wine scene. Today it is one of the smallest DOCG in Italy.
